Highway to hell (Act 2 - Duke, Bear, Guns, Sanchez) Empty Highway to hell (Act 2 - Duke, Bear, Guns, Sanchez)

The drive is anything but gentle. The open fields and farming land of Poland around Lowicz has seen better days indeed and even though you can see Guns working the wheel heavily to avoid impact creators, fences and shattered vegetation the terrible condition of the landscape seems a endless maze of hazards. At one stage the groups vehicle bumps over the rust-red tracks of the rail-road, although seeming in serviceable condition one can tell it has not seen much use over the years, it would definitely not support the bullet trains that Europe is use to using, perhaps an old steam train. Taking longer then expected the group reaches the a off-load point someway far back from the highway, leaving Private Miller in charge of the Hum-Vee the group carries out it's work expertly appraising a nearby section of highway with Trips giving his firm approval of the road at the site of ambush with many other facts about it mapped down for use later.

Moving back to the Hum-Vee the group easily spots out a incoming convoy and grab cover prone to watch it's passing - With a quick count the group picks out four T-72 tanks loaded with infantry riding on top holding handle and hatches seeming quite at ease and three Type 531 armored personal carriers. Counting only the troops riding open on the tanks, leaves the total at twenty men. The convoy passes by but not without a quick count of time taken to cross the highway ambush site.

Mounting the Hum-Vee the small group shares a moment of tense relief as the vehicle struggles to start back up, the whole excursion at this stage approximately taking a hour and a half. Falling into the empty gunners seat - the only available seat left on the Hum-Vee Private Miller asks; "Where to?"

Opening the passenger door, Bear stands on the step and surveys the scene momentarily, before squatting back down to speak to the others.
" So boys, what do ya think? We got our blow points .. but we still need to find some ambush sights. I dunno bout you, but I think we gonna have ta get a bit dirty and hoof it in foot. There is just too much armour floatin 'bout to get seen. So the floors open. thoughts fellas?"
He looks around the men, seeing their grit and determination mirroring his own, an excited glint in his eyes.

Pursing his lips, Duke reaches up and runs a hand through his hair, and gives his bandana a flick back with a jerk of his head as he stares off in the distance of the highway. After a few moments pause, the silence is broken with a semi hearty tone.

"Convey one was hell, and I been there and back before. Im not looking for another vacation just so soon. Im more interested in Ivan's kitchen, and seeing whats in the buffet."

Letting out a hoarse laugh, Duke then follows it up with a golley and then takes on a more serious tone as he speaks again.

"I agree with Tricks and Bear that we got our blow points. There be plenty of ambush sites I seen. The rocky bluff and high grass to the south of the highway. The farmhouse to the north. We can hit them in a crossfire. Supplies we be needing for waiting, dont want to be compromising our position once we set up. We need the rest of our boys. Should be safe moving at night now, not another convey till morning I expect."

Duke lifts his gaze slightly and peers intently with his one eye towards the setting of the sun. He then flashes a wide grin at Guns, and bangs on the side of the jeep.

"Its almost sundown. Gives us about thirsty minutes. Lets get this bucket of bolts moving eh partner? Unless theres something else?"

With a small sniffle and a rub of his nose Guns looks around slowly, peering out towards the road, bringing a pair of binoculars and peering away into the distance. His eyes falling upon a farm house and some fields

“Could be a nice sniper location in that house, what do you think sanchez” guns says as he continues to look at the terrain bellow “and might get some decent concealment for an MG in those crops, dig ‘em in a bit and they should be sweet”

Guns tucks the binoculars back into one of his jacket pockets before pulling out a small notepad and a pencil, and drawing out a quick sketch of what he can see. “I don’t think were gunna find a better spot than this, we have cover and concealment” guns checks his watch quickly before looking back to the humvees other occupants "im with duke, i dont think theres much more that we can do here tonight"

As Sanchez crouches down after looking around for a good sniper position he turns to Guns and says;

" Sounds good mate, if possiable i'd like some MG cover just incase they decide to send some commies my way, i can only kill so much before they get to close"

he reaches into his gear and pulls out his scope container and attaches the scope to his M21 sniper rifle.

"I've got few grenades, 6 frags "n" 2 smoke if someone wants them, whoever has the biggest nads and be closer to the action, mines..do we have any mines?..we can place them on the road it may be a way to knock out a tank."

Thinking about what he just said and remembering about a movie he had seen as a kid

"Maybe its wishfull thinking, but when i was a kid that i seen a movie where the bad guys knocked out the front and rear vehicle's in order to stop a quick retreat that way the people in the middle were basically sitting ducks, i mean if we have the gear it maybe worth a go"

The Sergeant didnt know if anyone would go for his idea or if they even had the equipment to pull off something like this but he thought it sounded good, on paper anyway.

Looking back to Sanchez from the front passenger seat, Duke says.

"Calm down rookie. We've all got our own boom sticks. You just worry about sending a present made of lead to our radio friends when we see them. They will be your first priority. I trust ya know how to use that thing? Cuz I know you didnt get into the army on ya looks."

Duke's expression lightens as he gives a nod and grin to Bear after looking away from Sanchez.

"I believe Bear has the balls of steel among us partner. He needs to use a kids helmet as a cup for football, just dont ever let him hit you with it. I saw him knock this lassy out one night, good thing too, she probly looked like a bit like Sanchez."

Picking up a larger map of the local area, Duke gives it a quick glance over. He raises out a finger and points to the north.

"Alright Guns. That way. Giddy up partner."

Highway to hell (Act 2 - Duke, Bear, Guns, Sanchez) Empty Re: Highway to hell (Act 2 - Duke, Bear, Guns, Sanchez)

Post  Admin Fri Jun 05, 2009 4:25 am

The return trip with the light getting worse becomes more rough then the trip to the highway scouting location - forcing the Hum-Vee to travel any trails that Guns can locate to keep away from the varied amount of road hazards. It isn't long before the Polish fields break and the rusted tracks of the familiar train tracks come into sight, and with Duke's hard work with the map and compass on the front seat seems to be having difficulty disconcerting the exact location of the group.

As you travel your Hum-Vee's radio comes to life with a grim transmission; "Is anyone out there!?!, This is Master Sergeant Rakes of the 2nd Marine Div - We're requesting immediate assistance!" In the background of the transmission the team can hear the explosions of heavy munitions - "We've got nothing left, we're being over-run! Soviet TD with a-" Without warning the transmission dies the whole thing only taking close to two seconds, never to transmit again.

As the sun begins to dip below the horizon your team finally reaches the Lowicz-Kutno highway crossing when Sanchez calls out for the Hum-Vee to stop just over two hundred meters from the highway. In the dying light he points out the northern side of the road, and suddenly a heavily camouflaged gun-pit can be recognized by everyone. A deadly AT-Gun barrel protruding from it.

"ah sh*t" guns exclaims as he skids the humvee to a stop near a small stand of trees
grabbing his styre from the dashboard before stepping out of the humvee and pulling out his binoculars and looking down towards the AT gun.
"looks like its not pointed at us, but if we are spotted it wouldnt take them long to swing it around, and we dont have the time to move around it" guns says quietly as he crouches down "were just f*cking lucky that the light is shit, should give us a fighting chance if we want to take it down"

Bear Pulls his helm from his head as he stares towards the Gun in the distance, tossing it casually onto the floor and pulling his beret from his pocket. He drags it onto his head quickly, before beginning to reapply some more dark camo paint.

"Well I reckon it be time tah earn our keep. We can't leave that cannon sittin' there ready tah pound whoeva it pleases ... sides it sounds like it was stitchin' some of our boys up somewhere. We need tah make it quick n' quiet , cause I be bettin a week in tha' sack wid Dukes mum that there be more o 'dem Russkies over that rise."

He looks in the direction the gun is pointing. pulling the binoculars to his eyes grimly.

"Guns, git ya sorry arse ova' there and see if ya can see what they were shootin' at, can't seem tah see much in this light from 'ere. 'Cause there ain't that many o' our boys left round 'ere and I won't leave any of 'em behind if we can 'elp it. Duke, wanna take a stroll down to those trees over there n' see if ya can get a bit o' a head count so we can plan see if we can be a doin'this?"

He tosses the binoculars to Duke and turns towards the Ranger private, Miller.

"Yo Trips. What could ya rig up to blow that gun buds to give us a bit o' time to get our arses outta here with time to skip out on any chase."

The other two occupants of the vehicle private Trips and private Miller quickly examine their gear, Miller loading a fresh magazine into his M16 while Trips digs out a small bag he had been wearing attached to his belt. Checking the contents he looks to Master Sergeant Bear;

"Yes sir, can place a delayed charge on it - but it'd take a little while - About fifteen minutes. If you don't mind my professional suggestion Sir, we could always lob a grenade down the barrel of the Anti-Tank gun. That should make it useless considering finding replacement barrels is nearly impossible these days. If we all bail out running from the gun pit, I reckon we'd be safe enough."

As the men exit the humvee so does Duke, leaving his pack, and just grabs his m16a2 and unclicks the safety and cocks it. As Bear makes fun of his mum, he offers him a silent grin, his attention seemed more set on the gun emplacement and surrounding area.

He catches the binoculars and speaks quietly, looking at Bear.

"I can make the highway. That will give me a better spot than those trees. Take a bit longer tho. If im not back in fifteen minutes, just wait longer."

As he is about to leave he suddenly pauses as if to remember.

"Might wanna check how much cover our ride has too, or if you can conceal it better for now."

With that, he is off, moving low, and towards the trees, and then dropping prone as he makes his way to the highway, ready to use his binoculars to observe from a closer position.

Bear nods in silent agreement to Duke as he watches him move quickly towards his target location.

"Miller, Trips, get the Humvee back further in the trees and lets set about convealing it some more. It owuldn't do to have those Russkies pop out and spoil our suprise now would it? Lets get it done while the boys are out n bout so we can move either way when they get back. Sanchez kep an eye on our boys and that damn gun emplacement, let us know if we gonna get company."

He begins to look for branches and shrubs to cover the exposed areas of the vehicle, moving with speed and efficiency.

Highway to hell (Act 2 - Duke, Bear, Guns, Sanchez) Empty Re: Highway to hell (Act 2 - Duke, Bear, Guns, Sanchez)

Post  Admin Sun Jun 07, 2009 7:14 am

Dismounting from the Hum-Vee, Trips and Miller put their backs into pushing the jeep back quietly, making steady progress. Sticks, leaves and branches are plentiful in this area however in large pieces the group struggles to find intact branches that can just be laid straight over the vehicle. Minutes pass by, with the night settling in quickly as the breeze moves the branches in it's wake. A barely audible sound of a roaring engine can be heard in the far distance - so far away it's impossible to tell in which direction it comes from as it echoes along in the night. Soon it becomes obvious it isn't just a single vehicle but perhaps a handful, large vehicles at that are making fast speeds and it's quickly determined that they must be traveling from the west along the highway.

The group has not been the only ones to notice - Somewhere in the distance of the night there is motion in the tiny bluff with concealed gun pits. Under their camouflaged netting, pits and prepared trenches the other side of the highway was preparing.

A few moments pass and Guns returns to the parked Hum-Vee, Sanchez however can only motion to a small dark patch just beside the highway incline reporting Duke's location. The roaring of vehicles traveling grows louder and activity on the northern side of the highway increases steadily.

Bear frowns darkly, his brow furrowed deeply in thought. he turns steadily to Guns.

"What is it Guns. Friend or foe? By the sound if it I so hope its friendly"

As he speaks, Bear, removes his beret, stuffing it into his pocket and retrieves his helmet from the humvee strapping it on quickly. He shoulders his Shotgun from the front seat after ensuring it is loaded. He methodically checks that his knives, grenades, gear and ammo clips are all in place, before picking his M16A2 up once more, popping its clip out to check that it is full, before slamming it home once more. He pats the M203 attachment once, frowning before cocking the rifle grimly and moving to the edge of the clump of the trees to kneel in cover and looks down the road towards the source of the approaching vehicles, rifle raised.

Post  Evilone Sun Jun 07, 2009 3:16 pm

After being gone for around 7 minutes, Duke suddenly emerges on the group of men, puffing slightly. After a few deep breaths he moves closer to Bear and speaks quickly and quietly.

"We got five tangos in the main gun pit, and two Ivans hiding in a flanking gun pit under some camoflouged netting. We also have a problem. Whatever is coming this way along the highway... im sure even the rookie can hear it... that gun is fixing on it, and they are trying to hide what they aiming at. Its pointing that way... almost our way. That cannon is hot to go, its loaded."

Dropping to a knee near a tree with Bear, Duke looks off silently in the same direction, rifle semi aimed up, and then glancing back to him.

"If thats our posse coming this way, we need to break radio silence and call in that gun nest. It will shred them. Your call boss."

Bear looks to duke in thought.

"Aye you're right bud. The only advantage it gives us is all their attention is fixed forward... too many variables though .. and we don't even know if those vehicles are friendly." He pauses in thought a moment."Get on the radio Duke, try our channels, see if you can raise a friendly and warn em."

He claps Duke on the shoulder and moves in a half crouch back to the Humvee.

"Miller, Guns. Get that rig ready to roll again, I reckon' we gonna have to move quick when we gotta go. Hustle double time. Sanchez, get some eyes on that Gun pit from here, we might be able to offer some support if they are friendly and get in tha' shit." With that he hunkers in to offer his help to get the vehicle ready.

As Bear pulls back to the humvee, Duke holds up his rifle as if to cover him as he tries to keep a watchful gaze with his only eye. When Bear reaches his destination, Duke then withdrawls in a similar manner and takes up the vehicles radio after slinging his gun.

"Shadowfox to identify nearby friendlies. Report."

Duke waits ten seconds for any response and if none tries a different channel and does the same.

Highway to hell (Act 2 - Duke, Bear, Guns, Sanchez) Empty Re: Highway to hell (Act 2 - Duke, Bear, Guns, Sanchez)

Post  Admin Sun Jun 07, 2009 6:27 pm

Sanchez grips his rifle aiming down it's scope into the northern trenches. A look of concentration on his youthful features, gazing up for a moment to Bear he reports; "Those gun-pits are full now, Sir."

As Duke switches through the frequencies he seems to be having little or no luck as the vehicles roar forth at reckless speeds with their tires screeching over the highway road. For a moment it seems as if they may just flash on by, however as they're head-lights illuminate the area near the gun pit site and the forest the group is in Duke finally gets a reply; "Shadowfox, this is Sergeant Valance - What's your position?"

Unfortunately for Sergeant Valance at that exact moment the air thundered with a high caliber shot as the hidden AT-gun fires and the air lit up with bright tracer rounds from the machine guns. The group watches on unable to do anything in that exact moment as the shell tears into the lead armored vehicle with accuracy that could only be possessed by an experienced veterans hands. The large shell tears off the front right wheel, causing the armored hulk of the vehicle to travel along the highway a short distance it's front hull leaning against the road causing a ear-wrenching squeal not unlike nails on a chalk board and a shower of sparks - Skill alone of the driver stopped the vehicle from flipping over. Behind it a similar scene repeated with the jeep-like vehicle as machine gun rounds shredded it's front tires causing it to spin off-road into bare and dying bush.

The crews of the vehicles must of kept their minds about them because within the next few seconds they poured from their wrecks, the armored vehicles rear-hatch lowering and a number of men taking up a fire line on the highway. The armored vehicle's main gun opens up onto the gun-pit, scoring hits within, as does the jeeps M60 as most of it's crew disembarks through the side door and drivers door. Another large caliber thud sunders the air as another previously hidden gun along the right hand side of the trenches fires - Along with sustained return fire from the machine guns. This one hits directly into the armored vehicles turret burying itself deeply within the steel mass followed by a minor blast and smoke. The disembarking soldiers from the jeep-like vehicle immediately suffer as the machine gun fire from the emplacement rakes them causing a couple to drop to the ground in a shower of blood.

Behind the gun pits and trenches in the far distance the team can barely make out men running towards a large bluff illuminated by sudden lights coming on all over the northern side of the highway.

clambering into the drivers side door guns turns the humvees engine over "pick up your pantys, were outa here" guns exclaimes as he swings the humvee around. all the while the hollow boom of the AT Gun and the clatter of mechine guns fills the night air, interspersed with the shreiks of the dead and dying

"if we stay here where dead, move! move!" he yells as he slides to a halt next to the Bears position. with a glance towards sanchez, Guns scowls "that means you rookie!!" he bellows loudly

With hardly a pause, Bear stands and looks to Duke.
" You know the drill pal. We got men out there dyin'! Get 'em on channel and get their arses outta there and get the pissants to pop some smoke if they got it. I'll do what I can to get ar boys out, try n' keep the f$%#@ers off my arse if ya can." He reaches up and takes his tags off, handing them quickly to Duke. " Keep 'em safe bro, don't let 'em take me alive if it comes to it." He clasps him quickly on the shoulder and mutters a quick "Hoo Harr" and turns towards Sanchez and with a barking half yell; " take those gunners out now Sanchez, make em get their heads down!"
With a fierce grin, he raises his rifle to the hip, turns and sprints towards some cover, heading in the direction of the hell that has been unleashed on the road, laughing as he goes.
